About Excalidraw — Virtual Whiteboard
Excalidraw is an open-source, MIT-licensed virtual whiteboard for sketching diagrams, wireframes, and illustrations with a distinctive hand-drawn style. It supports shapes, freehand drawing, arrows, text, and an infinite pan/zoom canvas. This self-hosted build runs entirely client-side — the collaboration (multi-user live editing) and cloud-save features from the hosted excalidraw.com are backed by their own servers and are not available here; everything you draw stays local to your browser and can be exported or saved manually.
How to use
- Pick a tool from the toolbar — rectangle, ellipse, arrow, line, freehand draw, text, or the selection tool — then draw on the canvas.
- Adjust stroke color, fill style, and stroke width from the panel that appears on the left when a tool or shape is selected.
- Pan by scrolling or holding space and dragging; zoom with the controls in the bottom-left corner or your trackpad/mouse wheel.
- Save your work via the menu — export as PNG, SVG, or Excalidraw's own .excalidraw file format for re-opening later.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my drawing uploaded anywhere?
- No. This self-hosted build runs entirely in your browser — nothing you draw is sent to a server, including by this site.
- Can I collaborate with others in real time?
- No — real-time collaboration on excalidraw.com relies on their own backend servers, which this self-hosted build does not include.
- How do I save my work?
- Use the menu to export as PNG, SVG, or an .excalidraw file, which you can re-open later via the same menu — this build does not auto-save to any cloud account.
- What is the hand-drawn style?
- Excalidraw renders shapes with a deliberately sketchy, hand-drawn look — a signature feature that makes early-stage diagrams and wireframes feel informal and easy to revise.
